What are milia?
Milia are small, white (or sometimes pale yellow) spots that usually appear around the eyes, on the cheeks and on the eyelids. They’re a type of cyst filled with a substance called keratin, a protein that provides strength to the skin.
Symptoms
Milia are not harmful and don’t need to be treated in anyway however treatment is quick and simple if you are concerned by appearance.
Causes and risk factors
There is no definitive answer as to the cause why they appear or why some people get them while others don’t. They don’t appear to be related to different lifestyles or diets and are certainly not infectious or caused by poor hygiene. However these tiny plugs of sebum often form when the skin is dry. A good skincare routine with regular exfoliation and moisturising can help to prevent this condition. Please visit the skincare system on this website for more information on recommended products.
Treatment and recovery
Milia can be easily removed with the use of short wave diathermy a process of electrolysis no anaesthetic is necessary as treatment is very easily tolerated.
Most importantly, resist the temptation to pick at them. This will hurt, damage and possibly scar the skin, and may introduce a nasty infection.
