Removal of Facial Red Veins

Facial Red Veins

Facial red veins medically known as telangectasia more commonly known as thread veins or spider veins are damaged veins and capillaries just below the skin. They are extremely common in both men and woman and are often found on the face, body and legs.

What causes thread veins?

When the usually invisible veins expand, they start to show through the skin. Thread veins become more obvious as we age when the skin becomes thinner and looses collagen. They can be inherited but they can also be caused by a number of other factors including:  Sun exposure over the years, pregnancy, sign of rosacea (a skin condition), overuse of steroid creams, alcohol, smoking and prolonged standing.  Diascopy is a test for blanch ability by simply applying pressure with a finger or glass slide and observing colour changes the severity and depth of the condition can be understood.

Areas from which Thread Veins can be removed

* Face – By cauterisation using diathermy electrolysis

* Body – By cauterisation using diathermy electrolysis

* Legs – By Sclerotherapy (a superficial injection)

* Legs – By cauterisation using diathermy electrolysis

The Removal of Thread Veins by Diathermy Electrolysis

By tapping a very fine probe and applying a minute amount of current just below the surface of the skin along the affected area the blood vessel is cauterised, i.e. destroyed by heat.  The skin is blanched and the red colour disappears, the blood being reabsorbed by the body. The area may feel a little hot a few minutes this is quickly dissipated by the application of a cooling device.  A post treatment medication is applied directly over the area treated.  It is important to keep the area dry for 24 hours using only the product supplied by your practitioner.  Within 2-3 days minute crusts form occasionally bruising and slight swelling is experienced depending ton the depth and surface area treated.  Crusts usually fall of after 4-5 days and may leave a pink patch of skin, which fades but may take between four to six weeks to fade completely.  Legs can take longer to heal often taking up to three weeks.  The crusts must be allowed to fall off naturally as picking or treating the area without due care can result in unnecessary scarring.

Consultation

During the 15-minute consultation, we shall discuss the possible causes of your thread veins, and I will ask about your medical history, explain the treatment and describe the after-care procedures required.

The Duration of the Treatment

The duration of a facial treatment is about 15-20 minutes. Typically, 2-6 treatments may be required to clear facial veins but after one treatment there will be a noticeable difference. Subsequent appointments are made at 2-3 week intervals. Legs usually require several treatments at 5-6 week intervals. The interval allows the skin to heal fully and should any tiny spots be destined to reappear, they will have done so during this period, and can be dealt with at the next appointment.

Post Treatment Instructions

These instructions are designed to promote healing and to avoid irritation or infection of the treated area.

* The area may remain red for several hours
* Keep the area dry for the following 24 hours using medication provided
* Protect the area from soap, shampoo and hair spray etc. for 24 hours
* Avoid touching the area
* Do not knock off any tiny crusts present
* Do not use a sunbed or sauna and avoid strong sunrays until the area is     completely healed (several days). This is because the area treated may be irritated by the heat, may not tan, and may be more prone to sun-burn
